Rifa‘at ‘Ali Abou-El-Haj (1933-2022), a scholar of the Early Modern Ottoman Empire, completed Ph.D. in Princeton University’s Departments Oriental Studies and History 1963. A key member generation scholars who challenged Euro-American dominated academy its study Middle East, Dr. spent majority his teaching career at California State University, Long Beach. For over 50 year, critically engaged working on early modern state society via publications such as The 1703 Rebellion Structure Politics (Leiden: Brill, 1984; translated into Turkish 2011) Formation State: Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries (Albany: SUNY University Press, (1991; 2018).
